At Moorelands Kids, we think volunteering is so important that we created our VITAL youth leadership program for high school students at Marc Garneau CI. The program’s goal is to empower participants with leadership skills and help them become community leaders and positive role models through service in the community.
Right now, our 21 VITAL participants are finishing up their initial leadership training period and will soon embark on their volunteer commitment. So it’s a good time to reflect:
Why is volunteering so important?
For charities like Moorelands Kids, our volunteers are an indispensable part of our ability to empower kids to transform their lives. Volunteering is incredibly important to most charities; without generous volunteers giving up their time and talents, we simply wouldn’t have the means to operate.
Volunteers help make Moorelands Kids’ work possible at all levels of our organization. From our teenage VITAL participants who act as positive mentors and role models to our BLAST kids; to our volunteer Board of Directors who generously give of themselves to govern the charity; to our amazing team of Baby Bundles volunteers who come into the office to sort, pack and coordinate the program each week, the importance of volunteering can’t be overstated.
Aside from the benefit to the community and those in need, volunteering is important for what it brings to the volunteer too.
For example, volunteering is a great way to connect with your community and make new friends while feeling good about what you’re doing. It’s also a great way to get hands-on experience for a field you might be interested in working in.
For young people, volunteering can be especially important. As well as providing experience and giving the opportunities to practise and hone skills, volunteering has been shown to increase self-confidence and communication skills. Helping others also has numerous physical and mental health benefits.
The importance of volunteering is clear. If you are interested in getting involved, check out local community groups and charities and see who needs your help or take a look at our Christmas Sharing volunteer opportunities today!
