VITAL is a youth leadership program for students attending Marc Garneau Collegiate Institute.
VITAL (Volunteers In Training As Leaders) is offered to high school students throughout the year from October until June. In October, participants meet once a week for the 5-weeks of leadership training.
Following the training sessions, participants volunteer once per week in our BLAST program at one of three local elementary schools. Participants will have the opportunity to earn at least 20 hours of community service.
There is no fee for the program, however, registration is required. Spaces are limited. For more information, please call our City Programs Manager at 416-466-9987 Ext. 305 or email firstname.lastname@example.org
Volunteers In Training As Leaders
During the five VITAL leadership training sessions, participants develop leadership skills and positive character qualities that will prepare them to effectively work with the youth in our BLAST after-school program. Here are some of the fun, interactive things that go on during the program:
- Fun leadership skill-building workshops and games
- Public speaking and job preparedness workshops – great for resumes and college applications
- Planning and implementing activities at our BLASTafter-school program
- Gaining certification in First Aid
- Volunteering in their community and earning community volunteer hours.
- Participating in the Leadership Field Trip
I've learned so much by volunteering. What I’ve learned will help me understand people better and how to communicate with them. I feel much more confident!

THE LED AND VITAL LEADERSHIP FIELD TRIP
The Youth Leadership Field Trip is intended as an opportunity for program participants from our LED and VITAL programs to come together and explore challenges, consolidate leadership learnings and expand their personal networks and community connections. This retreat, either at a nearby outdoor education centre or at our own Moorelands Camp, gives participants the opportunity to connect with each other, practice the skills they developed over the year and reflect on how they will continue to use their newly honed skills after the end of program.
We enable kids to create connections, build confidence, gain competence and develop character.
The goal of the VITAL program is to empower young people to transform their lives and to become community leaders and positive role models.
