Moorelands’ Messages April 27, 2015

Hey Moorelands!

BLAST participants enjoy the sporadic sunshine

The crazy, roller-coaster weather has been giving our Budding Leaders After-school Teams (BLAST) a glimmer of hope that the spring is finally on it’s way… When the weather was nice a couple of weeks ago, BLAST Gateway participants were so excited to venture outside and play on the playscape! BLAST Thorncliffe were equally thrilled to take a trip to Playground Paradise  at Flemingdon Community Center where the indoor/outdoor playgrounds suit the (ahem) unpredictable weather…Rain or shine, it’s great for our kids to have lots of opportunities to have fun and be silly while building valuable social skills and developing positive peer relationships.

BLAST Thorncliffe have had lots of opportunities to flex their creative muscles recently. First of all as they crafted and enjoyed ‘Pin the Tail on the Donkey’ games. Then in another fun session they took part in a healthy cookery activity where they learned lots of valuable nutrition tips as they created tasty fruit kabobs. In activities such as these, our kids are put into groups of mixed ages. This not only means that older kids can help younger ones but also that the older participants (aged 10 – 12) can practise valuable leadership skills as they act as peer mentors to the younger participants. In turn, their younger counterparts learn to model the positive behaviours and character traits that their peer role models demonstrate. It’s win, win!

Moorelands would like to thank everyone who took time out from their busy schedules to attend our Annual General Meeting on April 15th.  It was so lovely to catch up with our fantastic donors and volunteers and hear all about Moorelands’ progress over the last year. There were many wonderful, inspiring speeches from a range of Moorelanders, including AGM chair, Judy Moore; incoming President; David Dorsch, Acting Executive Director; Lynda Tilley; and Camp Cabin life Coordinator, Jaleel Brown. It was especially touching to hear our speakers’ thoughts on the Moorelands community and culture.  In the words of Jaleel:

“The consistent positivity in the culture of Moorelands is what makes this community so strong. This translates to motivated staff, motivated children and hence a plethora of growth throughout every summer.”

Our thanks to Fasken Martineau LLP for the generous donation of their office space for this occasion. Check out the gallery below for some more pictures from the AGM.
