October 25th is “Make a Difference Day!” and it’s the perfect time to remind ourselves that the actions we take today can make a big impact. Decisions that you make today can create a ripple effect of kindness, compassion and change in your own community.
At Moorelands, we believe that everyone, no matter their age or circumstance, has the power to be a leader for change. How can you make a positive difference today?
Lend a Helping Hand
You don’t have to look far to find someone who could use a little help. Offer to rake leaves for a neighbour, help a friend with homework, or offer to make or clean up dinner for your family. Acts of service are a kind gesture, but also show that you are responsible and dependable.
Volunteer Your Time
Volunteering is an amazing way to give back and build new skills. You can help out at a community garden, animal shelter, food drive or events at your school. Or, volunteer your time, skills and passion toward a good cause. Do you enjoy spending time with your grandparents? Perhaps you might consider volunteering your time to brighten someone’s day at your local retirement home, bringing good company to an elderly person who may be lonely.
Spread Positivity
Sometimes making a difference can be as simple as sharing joy with others. A kind word, a smile or a compliment can make someone’s day. Try challenging yourself to do one positive thing every day. Say “thank you,” open a door or keep a door open for someone else, share encouragement online, or invite someone to sit with you at lunch. You never know who might need a bit of kindness today.
Get Involved
A great way to build a sense of community is to get involved in it! Look for ways to make an impact locally. Maybe there is a local clean-up day, a fundraiser or a team or club you can join. These are awesome ways to meet new friends, practise teamwork and find a sense of belonging in your community.
Be a Role Model
Making a difference isn’t just about what you do, but how you act. By practising empathy, showing respect and making choices that reflect care for others, you can become a role model for your friends, peers and even adults around you. Think about the people in your life that are good role models—teachers, parents, siblings, camp counselors and more. What kind of traits do they have? How can you be a good role model like them?
On Make a Difference Day, remember that every small action adds up. By showing kindness, stepping up to help, and practising leadership, you are helping build a stronger, more caring community and supporting young people to grow, learn and thrive.
Take action today and see the difference you can make!
