covid-19 kids learning at home

How is COVID-19 impacting kids?

Moorelands Kids is committed to supporting the most vulnerable segments of our community who are being impacted by COVID-19.

A recent United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) publication highlights that the COVID-19 pandemic is expected to have unprecedented impact on children and youth.

School closures, control measures, inaccessibility of traditional avenues of support, loss of recreational opportunities and reduction of family income all affect the physical and mental health of children, their learning and education experience and their childhood development.

While we might think that Canada has a great track record for supporting kids, in fact, our country entered the COVID-19 pandemic without resilient conditions for all children. According to the stats from UNICEF Canada:

  • 1 in 5 children and youth live in poverty
  • 1 in 10 Canadians lack internet connectivity to sustain social connections and schooling – fewer children have access in homes where connection has to be shared with other members
  • 1 in 4 go to bed or went to school hungry because there isn’t enough food at home
  • 1 in 4 experience abuse at home
  • 1 in 4 have symptoms of depression
  • 1 in 3 lack basic proficiency in reading and math at age 15

Moorelands Kids is deeply concerned about the negative impact of COVID-19 on children and we are committed to supporting and remaining connected with our kids through the pandemic. The current crisis has highlighted the barriers of inequality and social disadvantage and thus the need for support in the community for children is now more important than ever.

We believe every child has the right to succeed in life. Our team continues to keep working and helping empower children and youth to overcome these barriers to achieving success.

Although we might not be able to offer amazing in-person events such as Moorelands Camp this summer, we have come up with virtual programs that offer kids exciting community experiences in the online world.

Schools might be closed due to COVID-19 but children’s learning and development must continue. Our Moorelands Kids’ Virtual Programming helps keep kids learning and growing during these challenging times! We’ve been releasing a fun new video daily at 4 pm filled with amazing learning activities and tasks. To address social anxiety at home we’ve been holding secure, online weekly meet-ups for participants where children can connect with their friends and staff.

And now that summer is here, we are delighted that our new virtual summer camp, Moorelands Camp Lead On will be launching soon! Our virtual summer programs will have the same goals of positive youth development and leadership skill development amongst our participants.
