What Respect Means at Moorelands

“I grew as a leader by putting others in front of me, they go first. Treat others the way you want to be treated.”

Ryan, 11, Moorelands Camp Participant.

At Moorelands Kids, we lead by example to teach kids key qualities like respect and kindness. Respect is important for people of all ages, but is especially important for the positive development of kids.

Kids who are respectful are more likely to have healthy relationships with the people in their lives, to show consideration and care for others, to recognize boundaries and build trust.

“Moorelands taught me how to respect others and be nice, and to love everyone and not put them down because they’re different.”

Joel, 11, Moorelands Camp Participant.

By supporting Moorelands Kids, you help us teach kids respect by:

  1. Leading by example
In all of our after-school and camp programs, we provide children and youth with positive role models that show them respect and how to be respectful to others. Our staff at Moorelands model positive behaviour and good leadership because we know that role models are incredibly important to encouraging and empowering young people.
  1. Encouraging self-esteem and teaching kids self-respect
Kids who have respect for themselves are less likely to engage in negative behaviours and risky activities. They know what is good for them. Self-respect is also shown to reduce risks associated with peer pressure because kids know how to say no. Most importantly, teaching respect teaches kids to be kind to themselves. Our survey from 2021 shows that 94% of all program participants say they’re more respectful after participating in a Moorelands Kids program.
  1. Providing opportunities to show respect and make connections with those around you
We help encourage friendships and peer connections through team-building activities and group sessions. This year, Moorelands Camp offered 174 total hours of cabin group time, which provides space for connections between peers and staff in the hopes of maintaining and building mental health and resilience in our campers. As a result, 87% of our program participants said they made positive connections with peers and 91% demonstrated better teamwork.

By supporting Moorelands Kids, you support our effort to teach kids valuable qualities like respect, self-respect, kindness and compassion. YOU can give kids a safe, caring and respectful environment to grow and learn.
