Black Innovators in Canadian History

For Moorelands Kids, celebrating Black History Month reinforces that Black history is Canadian history. Canadian society has been influenced by and built upon the achievements of countless Black innovators in all fields. These individuals serve as role models for everyone with their persistence, creativity and leadership:

Poetry: Check out this collection of poetry written by Black poets throughout history.

Visual Arts: Art Canada Institute has curated a collection of Black Canadian artists you should know!

Music: The Globe and Mail interviews Black Canadian artists about their role models.

Literature: A list of 14 must-read fiction books written by Black Authors, curated by CBC.

Science, Technology, Engineering and Math:
Black Canadian scientists that have had an impact in their fields, curated by Ingenium.

Athletics: Sport-defining athletic achievements by Black Canadians, provided by the Canadian Encyclopedia.

Hopefully you’ll find learning about all these contributions and achievements as inspiring as we do. In a society that often minimizes and marginalizes the voices of Blacks in Canada, we encourage you to seek them out and highlight them all year long! Together we can empower the younger generation of Blacks in Canada to thrive, contribute to society and achieve the success they deserve.
