Moorelands’ messages January 12, 2015

Hello and a Happy New Year from Moorelands!

Last week was our first week back in the office after the Christmas break and everyone is feeling refreshed (and a little more rounded!) and raring to go!

We were super excited to welcome back our Budding Leaders After School Teams (BLAST). It was great to reunite with returning kids from last semester, as well as bunch of newbies who joined this month and are already making lots of new friends.  All three of our locations got started right away on deciding the different sports they will learn in January as part of their physical literacy program:

Canadian Football
Canadian Football
  • At Gateway, kids will be learning FOOTBALL – watch out CFL, we’re honing some top talent…
  • At Grenoble, kids will be learning BADMINTON – shuttlecocks at the ready!
  • At Thorncliffe, kids will be learning VOLLEYBALL – Let’s see if we can turn out some future Olympians 🙂
Galaxy slime!

This week at BLAST there’s lots to look forward to, for example, Grenoble kids are going to be exploring the night’s sky and making GALAXY SLIME!  Participants will be using their craft skills to whip up batches of black, turquoise, violet, and silver solar systems from glue, glitter and watercolours and then swirling them all up together to make a galaxy! They’re going to need to use lots of their sharing and teamwork skills to be successful…Check back on the HUB for updates…

In other news, our Youth LED Leadership programs also resumed. Marc Garneau youth finished their orientation last week and will start volunteering at BLAST this week.  Participants will be going into our BLAST programs one day a week to practise the leadership skills they have been learning with Moorelands.  This is a really crucial aspect of the Leadership program as they will have to act as role models to the younger participants.  Importantly, they will be honing their social skills and practising their cooperation and team work abilities preparing them for the world outside our programs. Our youth are geared up for the challenge and recognise the importance of being positive influences on their younger counterparts. It’s great to see our Leadership youth making such a positive impact in their community.
