As we celebrate International Women’s Day, this year’s theme, “Accelerate Action”, is a powerful reminder of the ongoing need to empower women in leadership and break down barriers that still exist. True leadership is not about gender but about vision, capability, and action. This belief is at the core of the work accomplished by Deema Hiram, Communications and Stewardship Manager at Moorelands Kids.
A JOURNEY ROOTED IN WOMEN’S EMPOWERMENT
Growing up in Afghanistan, Deema saw firsthand the challenges women and girls faced, especially when it came to education. In a society where many girls were denied learning opportunities, and the right to education, her family’s unwavering commitment to equality gave her a chance to pursue an education and have a career.

“These early experiences deeply shaped my passion for advocating for both women’s empowerment and educational equity. My commitment has always been to break down the barriers that prevent girls from realizing their full potential, especially through access to education.” Her career in the non-profit sector has been a direct response to these challenges.”
She has dedicated herself to women’s rights advocacy, education, and leadership development, ensuring that young women don’t just have access to opportunities, but also have the tools they need to lead and thrive.
LEADING FOR CHANGE
Deema’s impact spans the non-profit sector, where she has worked on large-scale programs that provide leadership opportunities for young women. Her efforts were recognized when she was selected as an Education Champion by the Malala Fund, a prestigious honour that recognizes her dedication to advancing education for girls and young women.
“Women’s empowerment is at the core of everything I do. From mentorship programs to hands-on leadership training, I have always believed that the most impactful way to empower women is by giving them access to opportunities and supporting them in their journey to lead without limits.”
Her advocacy work also took her to the United Nations General Assembly, where she was invited to participate in discussions on gender equality and child protection. That experience only strengthened her commitment to lasting change: “It was an opportunity to amplify the voices of women who are often overlooked, and it strengthened my resolve to champion women’s leadership both locally and globally.”

WOMEN IN LEADERSHIP AT MOORELANDS KIDS
Now, at Moorelands Kids, Deema plays a vital role in shaping the organization’s communications strategy and fostering meaningful partnerships. What drew her to the organization was its mission to support children and youth facing socio-economic barriers through experiential learning programs where they develop leadership, confidence, character and skills to strengthen their emotional and social well-being.
“The opportunity to contribute to an organization that fosters leadership, confidence, and emotional well-being in children while prioritizing diversity and inclusivity was a key factor in my decision.”

Women in leadership at Moorelands Kids thrive in an inclusive, diverse, and supportive environment.
“The leadership team actively ensures that women have equal opportunities and is dedicated to supporting their professional growth, creating an environment where women can thrive and contribute meaningfully to the organization’s mission.”
BREAKING BARRIERS & CHANGING THE NARRATIVE
Supporting women in leadership isn’t just about encouragement – it requires real action. Deema believes the real progress comes from taking concrete steps, such as:
1. Provide mentorship and create leadership development opportunities.
2. Foster a culture where leadership is recognized by ability, not gender.
3. Encourage women to step forward and equip them with the tools they need to overcome obstacles.
“To support women in leadership, I believe in providing mentorship and creating leadership development opportunities where women can excel. It’s also about changing the narrative – fostering a culture where leadership is not defined by gender but by capability, vision, and action.”
She also emphasizes the importance of recognition – acknowledging and celebrating women’s contributions in the workplace.
“One of the simplest yet most impactful ways to support women is by acknowledging their contributions and providing recognition for their achievements. Small gestures like providing a platform for their voices, offering mentorship, or encouraging their career development can make a huge difference.”
ADVICE FOR WOMEN IN THE NON-PROFIT/CHARITY SECTOR

For women considering a career in the charity and non-profit industry, she shares some valuable advice: “Stay resilient and believe in the power of collaboration. The charity sector is full of opportunities to make a real difference, but it can also come with challenges. Don’t be afraid to take risks, seek mentorship, and learn continuously. Your passion and determination will get you far.”
WOMEN’S STRENGTH IN LEADERSHIP

When asked what women naturally excel at in leadership, she highlights emotional intelligence and collaboration.
“I believe that women naturally excel at building strong, empathetic relationships and fostering collaboration. In leadership, this emotional intelligence helps create inclusive, cohesive teams that work well together and thrive.”
THE FUTURE OF WOMEN IN LEADERSHIP
As we look ahead, one thing is clear: Women’s leadership is essential for creating a more just and equitable world.
“By supporting one another, we create pathways for future generations of women to lead and make meaningful changes. I am thankful for the women who have supported me along the way and for the opportunities I have had to empower others. Let’s continue to break down barriers and celebrate women’s achievements – not just on International Women’s Day, but every day.”
This International Women’s Day, let’s commit to accelerating action by mentoring, uplifting, and empowering women leaders – because when women lead, communities, organizations, and the world thrive.
