Having some time off over the holidays can be relaxing and a great opportunity to rest and refresh before returning to school in the new year. But once the excitement wears off and there’s nothing to do, sometimes it helps to try something new.
Here are some things you can do if you’ve got extra time on your hands this holiday season.
Visit your local library.
The Toronto Public Library has many programs for kids and families. Check out what is happening near you by clicking here.
- Did you know that if you have a library card, you can even access books, movies, magazines, theatre and music online through the library?
Practise your STEM skills with these DIYs from the Ontario Science Centre:
Science isn’t just for the classroom – you can do it at home, too. Try an experiment from the Science Centre, like making bubbles or 5-minute ice cream. Yum! Click here for a list of experiments.
Bundle up and play in the snow.
If there’s snow on the ground, it’s time for a snowman! Put on your coat, hat, mittens and scarf, and spend some time outdoors. Invite friends or siblings to build a snow fort, or see who can make the biggest snowball.
Play games online for free!
CBC Kids has a ton of free games you can play online. There is something for everyone, whether you like puzzles, matching, sports, strategy or action games. Click here.
Try to learn a new skill.
The holidays are a great time to learn a new skill like cooking, baking, knitting, drawing or dancing. Maybe you’ll find a new hobby!
Learn something new!
Interested in animals or wildlife? The Toronto Zoo publishes fact sheets on all of the animals in the zoo. You can read about where they live and what they eat, as well as the conservation of their species. Simply click on a topic, choose an animal, and learn all about it! Start here.
National Geographic Kids has so many interesting activities to explore. There are games and puzzles, fun fact videos and articles on science, history, space and more. Here are some of our favourites:
- Weird But True! These short videos explore the answers to weird questions, like why rabbits need a dentist or how butterflies taste. Click here.
- Matching Gemstones: Learn about different types of gemstones with this fun matching game. Check it out here.
- Mission to Saturn: Journey to space and read all about Saturn and its rings. Learn more here.
