Hey Moorelands!
Exciting news! Send a Kid to Camp 2015 has now launched!! Every year, Moorelands Community Services launches a campaign to send kids, from under-served Toronto communities, to our fantastic Wilderness Camp on beautiful Lake Kawagama.
Right now it costs Moorelands $1,150 to send a kid to camp to experience 6 life-changing days in the Canadian wilderness. As a charity, Moorelands is reliant on the donations of our generous donors to keep our programs running. Last year we were able to send 600 kids on an activity filled adventure: swimming, canoeing, kayaking, learning archery and playing team sports; every activity designed to help them develop the character, skills and strategies they need to thrive in life. You can help RIGHT NOW by making a donation of any size that will help Send a Kid to Camp!
Back in the city, last week BLAST (Budding Leaders After-school Teams) Thorncliffe had “Game Show Week” and they played Survivor. Survivor is a fantastic game which helps kids build communication, team work and problem solving skills. Participants are put into groups and each group is given a location. Then each person in the group must use their problem solving skills to think of something they would bring to help them survive. As a group, the team works together using the tools they have ‘brought’ to the location to devise an escape plan! Finally each team has to tell the rest of their BLAST friends how they plan to make their escape. Check out their cunning escape plans below!
On Saturday March 28th, BLAST Gateway participated in a basketball clinic at Bay Street Hoops – a charity Basketball tournament – run in conjunction with KidSport Ontario. Moorelands was so excited to take part – our kids had an awesome time being active, learning new sports skills and making new friends. Thank you Bay Street Hoops and KidSport Ontario!
Engaging our kids in sports and active games is very important to Moorelands. Being physically active is not only important for a healthy life-style, it’s also a really fun way to learn a ton of important skills and character qualities like team work, fairness and honesty. That’s why we are SUPER stoked to welcome PACHI the official mascot of the Pan Am Games 2015 to BLAST for a workshop with all three programs on Wednesday April 8th! Check back next week to find out what PACHI had to say about the games this summer…we can’t wait!
Finally, don’t forget that you can buy tickets for Get Jazzed about Moorelands here. It’s going to be such a wonderful night with the brilliant Molly Johnson, tasty treats from around the world, an open bar and some very exciting live and silent auction items up for grabs…don’t miss it!
From everyone at Moorelands, wishing you a very happy Easter & enjoy the long weekend!
