The Government of Canada established a $4 billion Infrastructure Stimulus Fund under Canada's Economic Plan to mitigate against the impacts of the global economic recession by increasing the total amount of construction activity that were projected to start and be substantially completed in Fiscal Years 2009-2010 and 2010-11.

The Government of Ontario also recognized the impacts of the global economic recession on the Province of Ontario and mitigated against those impacts by increasing the total amount of construction activity to projects that was projected to start and be substantially completed in Fiscal Years 2009-2010 and 2010-11.

The Mackenzie Financial Charitable Foundation was established in 1999, funded with an endowed gift of $2.3 million from Mackenzie Financial Corporation. Founded in 1901 by Star publisher Joseph Atkinson, The Toronto Star Fresh Air Fund has raised millions of dollars and provided more than half a million children with a memorable summer holiday they may never have otherwise experienced.

Each year, more than 25,000 children attend more than 100 different day and residential camps thanks to the contributions from thousands of generous individuals, organizations and businesses to The Toronto Star Fresh Air Fund. Many of the campers are from disadvantaged families. A significant number of campers are also children with special needs, medical conditions or who are confined to hospitals and other facilities. This summer experience helps them build self-esteem and social skills in a safe, fun and nurturing environment.
